Buying guide

Multi-axis machining: reaching complex geometry

Multi-axis machining can provide access to angled faces, curved surfaces and compound features on brackets, impellers and instrument components. The best setup strategy depends on the geometry and tolerance chain.

Design points to review

Supply the full 3D model alongside a controlled PDF drawing. Identify datum references and functional surfaces. Tool reach, fixture access and collision clearance influence the feasible process; complex appearance alone does not establish a need for five-axis machining.

Material and acceptance requirements

Consider inspection access as early as machining access. Agree which dimensions require a report and how freeform surfaces will be evaluated. Material, finish and deburring requirements should remain consistent across all drawing revisions.

Prepare a comparable quotation

  • Send the STEP model and dimensioned PDF with the same revision.
  • State material grade, finish, quantity and delivery destination.
  • Mark critical tolerances and required inspection documents.
  • Identify sample approval and repeat-order expectations.

Price, lead time and manufacturing feasibility are confirmed after review of the complete requirements.

FAQ

What should I include in a machining RFQ?

Send a 3D STEP file and a dimensioned PDF drawing, material grade, quantity, surface finish, critical tolerances and delivery destination. If you only have a concept, describe the function and mating components.

Can I request a prototype before a production batch?

Yes. Identify the prototype quantity and expected repeat-order volume in your inquiry. We will review manufacturability, inspection needs and the transition to batch production before quoting.

Are the components shown available off the shelf?

The catalogue illustrates custom machining applications. Every project is reviewed against your drawing; materials, dimensions, pricing and lead time are confirmed in the quotation.
